An Introduction to Blockchain Technology: Definitions, Applications, and Challenges

Blockchain is the revolutionary technology behind cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Recent years have seen an explosion of new products and services based on blockchain, including the boom of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) trades, Decentralized Finance (DeFi), and supply-chain applications. This talk will introduce basic concepts behind blockchain networks, explain some high-profile applications, and highlight regulatory and governance challenges faced by the industry.

Arthur Carvalho (Google Scholar)

Dr. Arthur Carvalho is the Dinesh & Ila Paliwal Innovation Chair and an Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Analytics at Farmer School of Business, Miami University (USA). He received a Master’s of Mathematics and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo (Canada), and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Federal University of Pernambuco (Brazil). His research work involves the development and deployment of AI techniques, statistical methods, and blockchain-based systems aiming at improving business processes and decision-making. Dr. Carvalho has collaborated with several companies through research work, consulting, and/or joint student supervision, including Microsoft, KPMG, IBM, PwC, Cardinal Health, and Unilever. His views and work have been featured in Bloomberg, Inside Higher ED, IoT World Today, Poets & Quants, Lifewire, and The Journey.

 

Workshop II

Elements of Intelligent Railway Infrastructures

Apresentação

In this invited lecture I will provide elements of my research in the field of Intelligent Railway Infrastructures. From that field, we face three major challenges: how railway infrastructures can perceive their condition, how they can make optimal and timely decisions, and how they can keep learning to improve their performance over time systematically. Then, the railway infrastructure can be treated as a living being from where each methodology will contribute to creating its digital brain. The research to be discussed is in the interface between railway engineering/railway infrastructure and different research areas such as computational intelligence (neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computation), structural health monitoring, maintenance of engineering structures, control of railway systems, asset management of transportation infrastructures, big data, and optimization.

Alfredo Núñez (Google Scholar)

Dr. Alfredo Núñez is an Associate Professor in the field of Intelligent Railway Infrastructures at the Section of Railway Engineering, Department of Engineering Structures, the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. Dr. Núñez received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Chile, Santiago, Chile, in 2010. He was a postdoctoral researcher with the Delft Center for Systems and Control, Delft, The Netherlands, from 2010 to 2013. Dr. Núñez is a Senior Member of IEEE since 2014 and author/co-author of over a hundred international journal and international conference papers. Dr. Núñez belongs to the Editorial Board of the journals IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems - IEEE (Associate Editor) and Applied Soft Computing - Elsevier (Editorial Board Member). His research interests include intelligent railway infrastructure, railway engineering, computational intelligence (neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computation), structural health monitoring, maintenance of engineering structures, control of railway systems, asset management of transportation infrastructures, big data, and optimization.
